Benedikte Bjerre
(*1987 in Copenhagen where she lives and works) after finishing her BA in Sociology at the University of Copenhagen studied art the HFBK Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. During a Rundgang at the Städelschule in 2014 our encounter with her work started. She showed her degree work in the class of Peter Fischli and Simon Starling. In literally the last room of the Rundgang she presented a moving video on an I-phone device. The video had been shot in a train on her mobile. The short sequence shows a train compartment on the journey from Mestre to Venice. Romantically the wind blows through the curtains of the night train just while arriving in the morning in Venice. The video is the essence of the young artist’s dream to arrive in Venice for the Biennial in a night train from far away. The video instantly captured us and so the collaboration started. Benedikte Bjerre’s practice is very versatile, she moves from sculpture, to video, photography and installations. In her first solo show she completely transformed the gallery with a huge block of Styrofoam and an installation attached in the first and a simple aluminium rod in the second room. The exhibitions by Benedikte Bjerre follow a coherent dramaturgy: Her aim is to show the interaction of the single works regarding volume, sculptural quality, architecture and content. The single parts assembly into a strange jigsaw.
Benedikte Bjerre received many residencies and grants amongst others in De Ateliers in Amsterdam, in the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. Since 2020 she is Professor at the Det Jyske Kunstakademi in Aarhus. Her work was presented in many solo exhibitions amongst others in 2021 at palace enterprise in Copenhagen and at Kunstverein Göttingen, in 2020 at Ringsted Galleriet, Ringsted, Denmark and at Harvester, Kantine Bruxelles, Pitfalls, Salon Kennedy, Frankfurt aM. She was included in the following important group exhibitions amongst others Klassenverhältnisse, Kunstverein Hamburg and Samfundsprognoser, Arken Museum for Moderne Kunst, Danmark. Her work is in the following public collections Schweizerische Mobiliar, Switzerland and MMK – MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main.
